Mondoro
A self-contained focus RPG in Flutter/Flame, evolved from an earlier Unity/Android prototype (PomMon).
Why
Most Pomodoro apps are timers: a checkmark and a streak counter, and the reward fades fast. I wanted the next play session to be the reward. Real focus sessions fuel a creature collection worth growing.
The first version was PomMon, built in Unity for Android. It proved the loop was fun, but Unity's edit-compile-deploy cycle was slow for a game that depends on a tight focus-session feedback loop, and Android-only limited where the idea could actually be used day to day. Flame is 2D-first, which suits sprite-based battles better than a general-purpose 3D engine.
Mondoro rebuilds the same core idea in Flutter: hot reload keeps iteration fast, and one codebase runs on phone, web, and desktop without a separate build pipeline per platform.
How it’s built
A Flutter app with a pure-Dart game core (roster, battle, progression, encounters, quests, save) kept separate from rendering, so game logic is testable without touching Flutter widgets. Flame drives the battle board, with creature artwork and custom Flutter rendering supporting collection and reward flows.
A sibling Dart/Shelf backend, mondoro-server, supports bearer-token registration, published trainer profiles, match recording, and a leaderboard. It stores data in a transactional SQLite database; legacy JSON data can be migrated once, and no separate database service is required.
- Pure-Dart game core kept separate from Flutter widgets, so roster/battle/progression logic is unit-testable in isolation
- Flame-driven battle board plus a custom CustomPaint "Living Scene" renderer for art-locked creatures
- 98-creature roster with bundled creature art and animation in the development build
- Local-first save via shared_preferences; no account required to play solo
- Sibling Dart/Shelf multiplayer server: bearer-token auth, published profiles, match history, leaderboard
- Evolved from an earlier Unity/Android prototype after outgrowing its iteration speed and platform reach
- Static splash page and animated ad built only from approved app sprites and habitat animations
